Brigantine’s newest restaurant on the site of Red Sails Inn would ultimately offer a dock-and-dine option.

SAN DIEGO ― The new restaurant on Shelter Island, Ketch Grill & Taps, is expected to open this summer.

Ketch is taking the place of Red Sails Inn. Frequented by many boaters, Red Sails Inn had a nautical theme and legacy and served as the original home of The Log.

“The Red Sails Inn was a home away from home for me when I would come to San Diego,” as one reader (who also happens to be a boat captain) put it.

Previously called The San Diego Log, William O. Roberts started writing about maritime news while sitting in the dining room of the inn 46 years ago.

Despite having a dozen years left on the lease, Red Sails Inn closed its doors on Aug. 31, 2016, when the lease was sold to the restaurant group, Brigantine.

Ketch, a casual dining establishment serving fresh seafood and craft beers, is the latest dining concept launched by Brigantine; the restauranteur is also planning to open another new dining concept at the former Anthony’s Fish Grotto in the North Embarcadero.

Port of San Diego representative Marguerite Elicone added boaters currently have a couple dock-and-dine spaces available to them and a few more will become available once Ketch opens for business.

The Log reached out to Brigantine President Michael Morton Jr. inquiring on the exact dates for the grand opening of Ketch as well as dock-and-dine. Morton has not responded.

Ketch is forecasted to open in late summer, Elicone from the Port of San Diego relayed.
