Oceanside Senior Anglers Host Guest Speaker Feb. 7

OCEANSIDE — Oceanside Senior Anglers Club will present Fisherman’s Landing manager Doug Kern as the guest speaker for the Feb. 7 meeting.

Kern, who received a bachelor’s degree in business while in college in Los Angeles, claims he received a “minor in fishing” as well, because of all the classes he missed while out on the water.

After finishing school, he started working at Hook, Line & Sinker tackle shop in San Diego, where he became manager in 1981. In 1986, he was hired to run Fisherman’s Landing Tackle Shop by Frank LoPreste. By 1993, he became a full partner in the shop with LoPreste and Bill Poole.

“He’s the only guy I know that was born with a fishing rod in his hand,” said Oceanside Senior Anglers social director Lee Wood.

Kern is primarily a saltwater enthusiast and actively fishes the bays, kelp beds and islands. He also frequently heads out on offshore tuna and long-range trips; and he enjoys fishing in his 23-foot Parker center console sportfisher.

Oceanside Senior Anglers general meetings are open to the public and are held the first Tuesday of every month — from 9-11:30 a.m. at the Oceanside Senior Center, 455 Country Club Lane. For more information, call (760) 435-5250 or visit osanglers.org.
