Sail Free at Safe Boating Week Kickoff

LONG BEACH — Free sailboat rides will be offered by the US Sailing Center-Long Beach on Saturday, May 18 to kick off National Safe Boating Week.

The Sailing Center — located at the beginning of the peninsula, at 5489 E. Ocean Blvd. — will host an Open House from 11 a.m-3 p.m. and is inviting the public to come sail, learn about the various courses offered and have a snack.

Free hot dogs and beverages will be served during the Open House, and life jackets will be given out to promote boating safety. Drawings will also be held to give away adult keelboat sailing classes and kids’ summer sailing camp sessions.

Additionally, the US Sailing Center is offering an $80 discount (30 percent off) on its 2013 Summer Learn-To-Sail Special. These classes are designed for adults with little or no boating experience. Students meet once a week and work in groups of three to five people, with an instructor.

For those who are interested in purchasing a boat, the Sailing Center has vessels in all shapes and sizes, ranging from dinghies to keelboats. In preparation for its Annual Marine Yard Sail on June 15, the Sailing Center will preview some of the boats that are available for purchase.

The US Sailing Center-Long Beach offers a wide range of programs that range from youth summer sailing camps and adult Learn-to-Sail courses to outreach for at-risk youths and the disabled — as well as programs for high school, collegiate and Olympic sailors. The not-for-profit US Sailing Center is administered by the Pacific Coast Sailing Foundation, a 501-c-3 organization. Tax-deductible donations may be made to the PCSF to support these programs.
