Sailors to Share Circumnavigation Stories, Aug. 29

MARINA DEL REY — Boaters dreaming about setting sail on a round-the-world cruise can learn from two cruisers who did just that, during California Yacht Club’s upcoming Aug. 29 yachting luncheon.

Addie Greene and Pete Eastman will present “How the Winds Laughed,” a recounting of their ambitious circumnavigation aboard a 28-foot sailboat.

Attendees will also see a photographic essay covering their circumnavigation aboard a Hallberg-Rassy P28. They made the trip in 1973 on what was one of the smallest yachts at that time to sail around the world.

“The world was a different place 40 years ago — no personal computers, no cellphones, no GPS — and islanders who lived on atolls had not yet begun to worry about global warming,” Greene said.

The experienced sailors will also share passages from their memoirs, titled “How the Winds Laughed.”

The luncheon at the club — at 4469 Admiralty Way — will begin with Happy Time at 11:30 a.m., followed by a buffet luncheon at 12:20 and the presentation at 12:45 p.m. The cost is $17.50. Reservations can be made by calling (310) 823-4567.
