San Diego Marine Exchange Celebrates 30 Years with Donnelly Family

On June 15, the San Diego Marine Exchange will be celebrating a milestone: its 30th year of ownership and leadership under the Donnelly family.

“Our store has been a landmark on Shelter Island since 1950, when Elliott Pohl and his son John opened their doors for business,” explained owner Judy Donnelly.

In 1983, Dale and Judy Donnelly purchased the Marine Exchange from John Pohl, and they carried on a tradition of providing quality products and expert, knowledgeable service for commercial and recreational boaters.

Dale Donnelly passed away in 2003, and Judy Donnelly has continued to grow the company while remaining focused on customers’ needs, especially those pertaining to a vessel’s basic operating requirements.

The store stocks engine-related parts and running gear, electrical products, pumps and replacement parts, plumbing fittings, sandpaper and other abrasives, and cleaning products. “Our huge inventory also includes anchoring and docking equipment, fishing gear, chairs and pedestals, deck and hull hardware, ventilation materials, lighting products, tools and fasteners,” Donnelly said.

The San Diego Marine Exchange is also the parent company of Downwind Marine (established in 1976) and Sailing Supply (established in 1972).

“Our stores make up a complete chandlery, dedicated to finding you the right equipment and supplies at the right price to meet your vessel’s cruising, racing, maintenance or safety requirements,” Donnelly said.

The store is located at 2636 Shelter Island Drive. For more information, call (619) 223-7159 or visit sandiegomarine.com.
