San Diego students partake in a ‘Voyage of Hope’

RANCHO SANTA FE — Sailors from The Nativity School embarked on an overnight field trip aboard the Star of India. The fifth graders sailed from Great Britain to the United States, as the students relived the lives of 1870s emigrants who signed aboard as sailors “before the mast” in exchange for passage.

The field trip was the San Diego Maritime Museum’s Voyage of Hope program, an award-winning living history program designed as a hands-on exploration of the social studies curriculum. Students hoisted barrels and sails, rode a boatswain’s chair, sung chanteys, stood night watch, swabbed the decks and dealt with a captain and crew.

Nativity is dedicated to providing a challenging educational environment and enhancing curriculum is at the heart of each field trip offered.

The Nativity School is a Preschool through eighth grade Catholic school that teaches Christ-like values in a nurturing environment that is academically strong and rich in the spirit of life and love.
