SD Coastkeeper Announces Change in Leadership

Byline: The Log Staff

SAN DIEGO — San Diego Coastkeeper’s board of directors has announced new leadership for the environmental group, naming Megan Baehrens as executive director and Jill Witkowski as waterkeeper — a common structure in the global Waterkeeper Alliance.
According to a statement from Coastkeeper, Baehrens will direct administrative, fundraising and managerial aspects and Witkowski will provide direction on policy, legal issues and programs.

Both assumed their respective roles following the departure of former executive director Gale Filter, who resigned June 22, less than one year after being appointed to the position last July.

Filter cited personal reasons for his resignation, and described his time with the organization as “an excellent experience, and truly rewarding.”

“We thank Gale for his strategic leadership and contributions to Coastkeeper and wish him well in the future,” said David Welborn, president of Coastkeeper’s board of directors. “Our board and staff are committed to executing the strategic plan that is now in place. We know that Jill and Megan’s passion and leadership will inspire our staff and volunteers to continue their important service to our community.”

Baehrens, previously Coastkeeper’s development director, joined the group in April 2009, and Witkowski, previously legal clinic director, joined the organization in January 2010. Both have worked directly with the executive director and organizational leadership for the past several years.
