SD Water Board Proposes General Permit for Boatyards

Byline: Ambrosia Brody

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board will tour nine local boatyards this month before discussing a proposal at a May 8 hearing, to issue one general permit for stormwater discharges from boatyards and boat maintenance repair facilities. The boatyards currently operate under individual National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits.

According to the regional board, the nine boatyards in its jurisdiction that will be toured have similar operations and discharges. Because of the similar regulatory and monitoring requirements previously established for the facilities, the board has decided to issue a single general permit instead of issuing individual permits.

Board members will tour Dana Point Shipyard in Dana Point, Driscoll Boat Works/Driscoll Custom Boat Boats on Shelter Island, Driscoll Mission Bay, the former Knight & Carver yard in National City, Koehler Kraft Co. on Shelter Island, Marine Group Boat Works in Chula Vista, Nielsen Beaumont Marine on Shelter Island, Oceanside Marine Centre and Shelter Island Boatyard.

The public hearing will be held on May 8 at the San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board Room at 9174 Sky Park Court, Suite 100.
