SAN DIEGO — Southwestern Yacht Club will present its annual Benefit on the Bay beginning April 14. The three-day event, which continues April 15 and May 5, benefits San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine, and it is designed to help ensure that all patients facing life-threatening illnesses are provided with the highest quality of care, regardless of ability to pay. To date, more than $500,000 has been raised by Southwestern YC and its sponsors through this event.

“Southwestern Yacht Club members look forward to this event each year, and we invite the community to come out to participate in the on-the-water activities and the evening gala,” said Commodore Geoff Longenecker. “San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine have been caring for San Diegans with life-threatening illnesses since 1977 — and this is our opportunity to give back.”

The event begins April 14 with an evening gala Benefit on the Bay Sunset Soiree.  Tickets are $75 for the gala, live and silent auctions (showcasing unique gifts, trips and adventures) and dinner.

The event continues April 15 with the 25th annual Charity Bay Race and Regatta. Skippers and their crews will compete in a pursuit start on a challenging 10-mile course around San Diego Bay. A limited number of individual, exclusive front-row seats, including wine and hors d’oeuvres, aboard decorated yachts can be purchased for $100 each.

Following the regatta, a post-race party, a barbecue and an awards ceremony are scheduled at Southwestern YC. Tickets are $15, and the race entry fee is $60.

On May 5, the event will provide a day of fun for sport anglers, with the 42nd annual Bottomfishing Tournament. It includes breakfast, a day of fishing and a banquet/fish fry with a wide array of raffle prizes. The entry fee for the tournament is $75.             Event sponsors at the $1,500 level can receive tickets to the gala, seats on the spectator yachts, tickets to the post-race barbecue and party, as well as tickets to the anglers’ post-tournament fish fry.

All proceeds will benefit San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine, a 501(c)(3) organization, and are tax-deductible as allowed by law.

Southwestern YC supports a variety of community events, including Operation Homefront in support of the troops, the Special Athletes’ Sailing Program, the Junior Foundation (providing scholarships for youth sailing programs) and other charitable programs. The club was founded in 1925 and today has more than 750 members involved in a wide range of boating activities.
