Kardboard Kayak Races paddle into Santa Barbara
SANTA BARBARA — Budding shipbuilders and engineers are invited to participate in the annual Kardboard Kayak build it and race it competition scheduled for July 9.
The popular team challenge continuously draws crowds to the Condor Express docks where spectators cheer on the novice boat builders as they race their boat in the harbor. Some boats float and others sink.
As part of Semana Nautica and hosted by the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, the day begins at noon as participants register their teams for the competition. Then teams of up to four have one hour to get to work building their vessels on West Beach using materials provided to them – two sheets of cardboard, one roll of tape, a marker, a utility knife and one yardstick.
At 3 p.m. racers splash their kayaks and race to a buoy and back. The Kardboard Kayak Races are divided into separate heats, with prizes awarded to participants in the Family Fun heat and the Paddling Pros heat.
The Kardboard Kayak Race will be held at West Beach near Sea Landing. Registration is $30 for Santa Barbara Maritime Museum members, $40 for non-members.
