Port of Los Angeles breaks ground on L.A. Waterfront roadside improvements

The Port of Los Angeles kicked off construction of the $14.8 million Harbor Boulevard Roadway Improvement Project in San Pedro with a groundbreaking ceremony Dec. 8. The roadside improvements are part of the larger L.A. Waterfront project, which aims to revitalize the San Pedro area into a visitor-serving destination for boaters, residents and tourists.
Harbor Boulevard will be realigned near 7th Street and Sampson Way, where city and port officials are planning to build San Pedro Public Market at the Ports O’ Call Village.
“The realignment of Harbor Boulevard signifies the beginning of a project that our community has desired for a very long time,” Los Angeles City Councilman Joe Buscaino said. “The redevelopment of Ports O’ Call will have a positive ripple effect for the entire Harbor Area community.”
Port and city officials hope construction will be completed by spring 2018. San Pedro Public Market is scheduled to open in 2020. The new intersection of Harbor Boulevard, 7th Street and Sampson Way would help connect the San Pedro waterfront to boaters, Catalina-bound and cruise passengers, residents and visitors.
living in san pedro i am highly skeptical that any roadway improvement of harbor blvd will really be the thing that inspires people to visit pedro. u have only one real road to get to all the things that u plan to create. the freeway offramp and bridge access is shared by both people traffic and shipping traffic and is a nightmare when anything major is going on. i have to stay at home during these sessions because there are times u just can’t move. 22nd st should be made 4 lanes to gaffey from harbor, the bike line kills a whole mess of parking along 22nd st and is almost never really used just a real waste of funds. the iowa should have been parked at the end by the lane victory, and don’t bring back the red car as it just messes with travel time when it crosses all the intersections. there is to much more that i could say, just a total waste of money. a sleepy fishing village, should be a sleepy fishing village..
