Auto collision claims life of local boater, yacht club member

Latham Bell was a staff commodore at Alamitos Bay Yacht Club and swim coach.

LONG BEACH — Latham Bell, an active member of Alamitos Bay Yacht Club and a regular judge on the international sailing circuit, reportedly passed away on May 5. He was 53.

Alamitos Bay YC’s website had Bell listed as its junior staff commodore as of press time. The club posted a few photos of Bell on its Facebook page, informing members of his passing.

Bell was killed after being involved in an auto collision on May 4, according to several news reports. The Seal Beach resident was reportedly driving along Pacific Coast Highway in Long Beach when he suffered a medical emergency and lost control of his vehicle. A Press-Telegram report stated Bell’s vehicle crashed into a restaurant.

News reports indicated he was on his way to a swim meet at the time of the collision; Bell was an assistant coach with Long Beach Wilson High School’s swim team.

Bell, who was also a teacher at Bixby Elementary School, regularly judged international sailing competitions. He also taught sailing techniques to young sailors, according to reports.

A celebration of Bell’s life will be held June 4 at 3 p.m. at Alamitos Bay YC.
