Alamitos Bay YC hosts Labor Day Regatta

Laser District 25 Championship and SCYYRA Ullman Frost Regatta comes to Long Beach, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1.

LONG BEACH—Ocean and bay course classes will compete against each other in the Labor Day Regatta, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. The two-day sailing event will feature the Laser District 25 Championship and SCYYRA Ullman Frost Regatta. Alamitos Bay Yacht Club is the organizing authority for the regatta.

The following ocean course classes are eligible to compete in the Labor Day Regatta: 29er, 5-0-5, A-Cat, C-15, Cal 20, Etchells, Finn, Formula 18, Hobie 16, I-14, Laser

Standard, Laser Radial, Laser 4.7, Mercury 18, Nacra 15, Open Bic-Ocean, Optimist, Portsmouth

(monohull and multihull), Shields, Snipe, Tempest, Thistle and Viper 640.

Bay course classes, such as Naples Sabot (Senior, Junior A, B, C1, C2, C3), Lido 14 (A, B), Open Bic-Bay, RS Tera and Optimist Green, are also invited to compete.

“Additional One-Design classes will be accepted at the discretion of the Regatta Chair based on the number of entries and the classes that are established,” according to the official Notice of Race.

Entry fee is $50 for ocean classes before Aug. 25 and $60 afterwards. Those competing in the Ullman Frost Regatta will pay an additional $10. Bay course classes are on the hook for a $40 fee prior to Aug. 25 and $50 afterwards. Juniors younger than 18 are entitled to a $5 discount in fees; U.S. Sailing members are offered a fee discount of $3.

Nine bay course and seven ocean course races are scheduled during the regatta. The first-race warning signal will be at 11:57 a.m., both days. No races will begin after 3 p.m. on Sept. 1.

Racing for ocean classes will take place in Long Beach Harbor, behind the federal breakwater. Alamitos Bay will be home to all bay class racing.

A competitors’ meeting will be held at 10 a.m. on Aug. 31 for ocean classes and 10:30 a.m. for bay classes. Both meetings will be held at Alamitos Bay YC’s patio.

“The hospitality of ABYC is extended to all participants,” the Notice of Race stated. “The Galley will be open each day. Regatta breakfast menu and bag lunches will be available. The club bar will be open after racing.”

Prizes will be available after all racing is complete; the number of trophies awarded will depend upon the number of boats competing.

Four classes will be awarded with perpetual trophies:

  • Largest Fleet: Fiesta de la Playa
  • Cal 20: George Lounsberry
  • Snipe: Don Hunter
  • Naples Sabot: Senior Sabot Labor Day Perpetual.

SCYYRA is the Southern California Youth Yacht Racing Association.
