BCYC hosts Leukemia Cup Regatta, June 6-7

CORONA DEL MAR – Anyone with a desire to help raise funds to cure cancer is invited to participate in the upcoming Leukemia Cup Regatta hosted by Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club, June 6 to 7. A special Commodores Challenge will be held as part of the two-day series.

Leukemia Cup Race Weekend kicks off June 6 with a PHRF race that welcomes PHRF, Harbor 20s and One-design classes to compete in the fun race. June 6 will consist of a PHRF race outside Newport Harbor. Harbor 20s will race June 7 in four scheduled windward/leeward races inside Newport Harbor.

Trophies and awards will be handed out after each day of racing with a special Leukemia Cup Dinner and Auction at 6 p.m., June 6.

“It’s a fun race; not a do or die race,” said Bahia Corinthian YC race chair Paul DeCapua of the fundraising event.

Commodores are invited to participate in the second annual Commodores Challenge, which sets yacht club leaders up against one another on a challenging race course. How it works is a commodore selects a race boat and crew that races out of their club to enter the race. The commodore must be at the helm at the end of the race and steer the boat across the finish line. The winning team takes home the Commodores Challenge trophy.

“This gives commodore the chance to get their best boat, best crew and beat the pants off other commodores,” DeCapua said. “It’s all for a good cause and this makes it interesting.”

The trophy is currently displayed in the Bahia Corinthian YC club house, whose commodore won the race last year.

“We can’t let that happen two years in a row,” DeCapua said, “we need more competition.”

Racers have until Friday, June 5, to register for the race. To signup, visit bcyc.org.

Bahia Corinthian YC is located at 1601 Bayside Drive in Corona del Mar.
