Boaters Will Race to Raise Funds for Hospice Homes

CORONADO — Boating enthusiasts and health care professionals will join in on-the-water competition and shoreside activities at the 11th annual Sharp HospiceCare Benefit Dinner and Regatta, Aug. 23-24.

Hosted by Sharp HospiceCare, Cortez Racing Association and Coronado Yacht Club, the event will support Sharp HospiceCare’s Homes for Hospice campaign, an initiative to build innovative residential living environments for people with life-limiting illnesses in San Diego.

The event kicks off at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23 with a pre-race dinner at the Hotel del Coronado, 1500 Orange Ave. The evening includes a cocktail reception, live and silent auctions, a full-course dinner and program, live entertainment and dancing to the music of “Sensational Showband.” Individual tickets are $185.

A full day of racing activities begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24 at Coronado YC, 1631 Strand Way. Guests can board a spectator yacht and cruise along the race course for a breathtaking view of the sailing regatta and San Diego Bay — or, they can board a racing sailboat.

Racing, organized by Cortez Racing Association, starts 1 p.m. at the east end of Harbor Island. Sailors will wind around San Diego Bay and finish near Coronado YC. Regatta and Physicians Challenge races are scheduled.

The post-race party will include a barbecue dinner, dancing, live music and an awards presentation. In addition, a silent auction and opportunity drawings are planned.

Individual tickets are $125 and include lunch, beverages (including beer and wine aboard the yachts), dinner and entertainment.

All proceeds from the regatta will support Sharp HospiceCare, an organization that provides comprehensive care and compassionate support for patients and their families struggling with a life-limiting illness. This year’s event is expected to net $250,000 for Sharp HospiceCare’s Homes for Hospice campaign. So far, the campaign has led to the completion of two homes in neighborhoods of La Mesa and Del Cerro, with a third home in the South Bay set to break ground in October.

Racers can register sailboats to compete in the regatta by visiting cortezracing.com.
