Coronado area yacht clubs hope to benefit Make-A-Wish Foundation with electric boat race
Charity organization hopes to raise at least $150,000 to benefit “Wish Kids.”
CORONADO — An “Amazing Race” style competition pitting electric boats against each other hopes to raise $150,000 to benefit children diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses.
The 9th annual Amazing Race of Children’s Wishes, benefiting Make-A-Wish Foundation of San Diego, returns to San Diego for two events both hosted by yacht clubs in Coronado.
Realizing a child’s wish through the Make-A-Wish Foundation costs, on average, $8,000, according to an entry written by Committee Chair Betsy Bondurant in Coronado Cays Yacht Club’s March newsletter. Proceeds from the Amazing Race themed events help the Make-A-Wish Foundation of San Diego fund requests submitted by “Wish Kids.”
Coronado Cays Yacht Club hosts an Electric Boat Challenge Cruise on April 15. Bicyclists are invited to participate in Coronado Yacht Club’s “Signature Amazing Race Bike Event,” which takes place May 7.
All proceeds from the April 15 Electric Boat Challenge Cruise will support The Amazing Race for Children’s Wishes.
The May 7 event kicks off with a biking event at 10 a.m.; followed by an electric boat segment at 11 a.m. Raffling and silent auctioning begin at noon. Afternoon events include a lunch buffet at 1:30 p.m. and formal program at 2:15 p.m.
The formal program features Wish Kids interviews, live auction, and an announcement of winners (race, raffle and silent auction).
Two Wish Kids – Kassandra, 14, and Jack, 17 – will attend both events in Coronado.
More than 300 guests, including wish families and community supporters, are expected to attend the post-race celebration, according to organizers. The public is welcome to attend. Contact Jacque Schneider (email@example.com) for more information about the May 7 event.
Both events will benefit Make-A-Wish Foundation of San Diego. Auctions and raffles will be held at both events.

The Navy Yacht Club also serves as host.
Make-A-Wish Foundation of San Diego has raised nearly $1 million and granted nearly 100 wishes since 2009. The organization’s goal is to grant 19 wishes in 2017, up from the 18 wishes granted in 2016 and 17 in 2015.
