Cortez Racing Association’s Beer Can Summer Series kicks off May 23

More than 100 boats expected to participate in 10-week sailing event on San Diego Bay.

SAN DIEGO — Ten weeks of sailboat racing on San Diego Bay will kick off just ahead of Memorial Day Weekend, as Cortez Racing Association’s 39th annual Beer Can Series returns on May 23. The series, which is presented by Cortez Racing Association and Silver Gate Yacht Club, will continue on consecutive Wednesdays through Aug. 1 (except for July 4).

More than 100 sailboats of different handicaps and sizes are expected to participate in the series.

Festivities begin at Silver Gate YC on May 23. The series through Aug. 1 at the following venues:

  • May 30, Southwestern Yacht Club
  • June 6, Bali Hai
  • June 13, Southwestern YC
  • June 20, San Diego Yacht Club
  • June 27, San Diego YC
  • July 11, Bali Hai
  • July 18, Silver Gate YC
  • July 25, Southwestern YC
  • 1, Bali Hai.

All racing begins at 6 p.m.; spectators can enjoy the action from Harbor Island.

The regatta series is open to members of organizations affiliated with U.S. Sailing and monohulls of 60 feet and smaller. Entries close at 6 p.m. on the Monday before each race and re-open again on the Thursday after each completed race. The entry fee is $100 for Cortez Racing Association and Silver Gate YC members and $250 for all other San Diego Association of Yacht Clubs members.

A kick-off party was held May 16 at Harbor Island Marina West.

The Beer Can Series started as a mid-week racing event during the summer. Beer can races are now held regularly in San Diego and other coastal cities.
