Lehman 12 race comes to Orange County coast

The 2018 Barney Lehman Championship will feature single-handed competition at Newport Harbor Yacht Club.

NEWPORT BEACH — Newport Harbor Yacht Club will host the 2018 Barney Lehman Championship, Oct. 27-28, pitting Lehman 12 boats against each other in a single-handed regatta event on the Central Orange County coast.

All Lehman 12 boats are eligible to participate in this Newport Beach regatta. The race is single-handed but all boats and crews must meet specific class-mandated weight requirements. Measurements will be taken between 9 and 11 a.m. on Oct. 27.

A mandatory competitors’ meeting will be held at 12:30 p.m., followed by the first warning at 1 p.m., both on Oct. 27.

The no warning signal will be given after 4:30 p.m. on the first day of racing.

Competition picks up again at 1 p.m. on Oct. 28; the second and final no warning signal will be given after 4 p.m. The trophy presentation will take place after racing, also on Oct. 28.

Sailing instructions will be posted on Oct. 27 at Newport Harbor YC. All racing will take place in the harbor, north of the yacht club’s main dock.

The first place boat in the regatta’s “A” Division will be awarded the Barney Lehman Perpetual Trophy.
