On the Horizon is a summarized Notice of Race for upcoming select regattas along the Southern California Coast. This column will briefly rephrase rules, regulations, qualifications, fees, and awards.
Halloween Race (Oct. 21)
MARINA DEL REY — The Del Rey Yacht Club will host the Halloween Race on Oct. 21. The event is governed by the rules as defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing. The event is open to monohull sailboats that can safely sail on Santa Monica Bay. Boats with a current PHRF SoCal certificate shall use it. The Race Committee will assign ratings to non-certified boats. There will be two divisions: Performance and Cruiser, all classes racing with PHRF ratings and eligible for overall prizes. Eligible boats shall enter by filling out the online entry form available at dryc.org/racing. Late entries will be accepted only if the Race Committee (RC) approves, and the entry fee will be increased by 25 percent. A $10 entry fee is due at the time of entry. The race will be on Santa Monica Bay using the Marina Del Rey Course Chart 17 marks and inflatable marks set by the RC. This will be an inverted start pursuit race. Handicaps will be calculated in advance, and each boat will be assigned a start time based on her handicap. Slower boats will start before faster boats, and scores will be the finishing order. After the race, DRYC invites racers to its club to enjoy refreshments and the annual costume contest. Individual prizes will be awarded based on the number of entries in each class and division. Howl at the Moon Race (Oct. 27)
DANA POINT— The Dana West Yacht Club will host the Howl at the Moon Race on Oct. 27. The event is governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing. Only Mainsails and Headsails may be used. Spinnakers, Gennakers, or doubleheadsails are not allowed. Whisker poles are permitted. The Sailing Instructions will be available on the Regatta Network website https://www.regattanetwork.com/event/25647 on or before race day. The regatta is open to all yachts whose owners or chartering skippers are members of yacht clubs affiliated with SCYA or a club affiliated with US Sailing. A $15 entry fee must accompany entries. The racing area will be the Pacific Ocean just outside Dana Point Harbor, as shown on Dana Point Race Chart v. 8.0. Prizes will be awarded for costumes and awards for first, second, and third, calculated by corrected time using PHRF handicap scoring. Annual SCCYC Campbell Cup (Oct. 29)
MARINA DEL REY— The South Coast Corinthian Yacht Club will host the Annual Campbell Cup Race. The Racing Rules of Sailing will govern this series. Skippers and entrants must be a member in good standing of the South Coast Corinthian Yacht Club. The entry fee is $15. A skipper’s meeting will be held at SCCYC at 10:30 a.m. on the race day. This is a pursuit race, and start times for all boats will be issued at this meeting. The start will be between the committee boat and the light at the south entrance of the MDR breakwater.
