On the Radar: LAYC debuts new Fast 50s Race

SAN PEDRO — Los Angeles Yacht Club will host a new regatta for the unique fleet – Fast 50s. Los Angeles YC has designed The Fast 50s Race regatta specifically for sailors looking to race these one of its kind vessels.

The regatta will be held Sept. 17-18.at Los Angeles YC, 285 Whalers Walk, San Pedro.

All new courses have been designed for the fleets which are essentially windward/leeward routes. This windward-leeward race will use existing features in the harbor such as government marks and oil islands instead of tetrahedrons as markers. The courses have downwind legs that allow the competitors to enjoy the ocean swells outside the harbor, with the weather legs sailed inside the breakwater on flat water.

Three races will be scheduled for Saturday and one for Sunday.

Trophies will be awarded to top finishers in both ORR and PHRF, with the Kenneth Watts Perpetual Trophy. Named to honor Watts, a celebrated Los Angeles sail maker, the perpetual trophy will be awarded to the overall winner.

Hors d’oeuvres and a no host bar will be available following each day’s race. Berthing arrangements will be available at Cabrillo Way Marina.

Sign up for the race at layc.org/home.asp.
