Sailors invited to Wild Turkey Classic Plastic

Ventura Sailing Club will host the 15th annual regatta on Nov. 30.

VENTURA—Sailboat racers are invited to compete in Ventura Sailing Club’s 15th annual Wild Turkey Classic Plastic, which takes place in Ventura on Nov. 30 – the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

The pursuit race is open to all boaters; boats with PHRF certificates will receive high points for the championship. Only boats older than 1999 are eligible for the Classic Plastic Perpetual Trophy.

Classes competing in the regatta are as follows: PHRF handicapped 60s, 70s and 80s non-spinnaker; spinnaker, post 96 feet monohulls, beachcats and ORCAs will determined on an as-needed basis prior to the race.

Racers do not have to belong to a yacht club to compete in the Wild Turkey Classic Plastic. The entry fee is $20 for Ventura Sailing Club and $30 for non-members. U.S. Sailing Association members receive a $5 discount.

The racing course begins just outside the northern entrance of Channel Islands Harbor. The random leg course is about 15 miles in length and will be chosen on race day (depending upon conditions).

“The finish line will be between the innermost navigational lights on the north and south jetties of the [Channel Islands] Harbor, according to the Notice of Race.

Sailing Instructions will be passed out at the Captains’ Meeting, which will be held at the Anacapa Yacht Club clubhouse on race day.

The Wild Turkey Classic Plastic is a pursuit style race, meaning the slowest boats start first and starting times are based on handicap.

“Sign-ups will be accepted from 8-8:45 [a.m.]. Captains’ meeting will be from 8:45-9 [a.m.]. First start will be at 11 [a.m.],” according to the Notice of Race.

Ventura Sailing Club will award trophies and prizes to the first, second and third place boats in each class (with a minimum of five boats per class). Also receiving prizes will be the overall PHRF non-spinnaker winner of the 60s to 97-foot “Plastic Classics,” according to the Notice of Race.

“Please meet at the [Anacapa YC] clubhouse after the race for results, storytelling [and] food,” the Notice of Race stated. “The official awards ceremony will take place at the [Ventura Sailing Club] clubhouse (upstairs at the Victoria Pub and Grill) at 6:30 p.m. on Tues., Dec. 10.”
