Turtle Rally sets sail June 26-27

NEWPORT BEACH — Racers searching for a rally – rather than a fast paced race – are invited to participate in Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club’s Turtle Rally, June 26-27.

The event is geared toward any boater with a vessel big enough to accommodate racers and their guests for an overnight stay.

Paul DeCapua, race committee chairman for Bahia Corinthian YC, initially proposed the idea and led the rally in June 2014, after club members shared how much they enjoyed races such as the Baja Ha Ha, which takes participants from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas.

Under the motto “Go slow, have fun,” the rally is intended to allow racing sailboats an opportunity to sail to the island.

“They can sail and join up with people who have motored over on powerboats,” he said.

Boaters will enjoy the one-day sailing rally that begins in the waters off Huntington Beach Pier. From there, the group will sail to Two Harbors where they will drop anchor and prepare for a day of planned activities, which includes a mixer and live music at Isthmus Yacht Club.

On Saturday morning, Bahia Corinthian YC will provide a wakeup call complete with mimosa and pancake breakfast. Sailors will then have the option of staying on their boat or joining in some planned activities. Saturday night activities include live music, dancing and cocktails.

Sunday morning will mark the end of the rally as sailors pack up and prepare to leave the island at their leisure.
