Avalon Holiday Celebrations Begin Dec. 1
Byline: The Log Staff
AVALON — Each year, boaters, visitors and residents of Catalina Island get the chance to enjoy some island-style Christmas festivities, while supporting the local community businesses in the process.
The 19th annual Shop at Home Night begins at 5 p.m. Dec. 1 at the Wrigley Stage with a community tree-lighting event, followed by a night filled with holiday cheer and shopping. The event, sponsored by the Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce, was created to put a spotlight on local businesses and give residents and visitors alike a chance to purchase island gifts at discounted rates.
Shoppers will hear carolers strolling along Crescent Avenue and can pick up Shop at Home Night discount cards that are good for a range of discounts and potential prizes at participating stores for the one-night shopping spree. Each store will have a drawing to give away an in-store gift or gift certificate.
Shoppers will also receive one universal discount card valid through Christmas Eve at any of the 16 participating Avalon retailers. The discount card can be picked up during Shop At Home Night at any participating store and will be good for 10 to 30 percent off all purchases made at any participating store between Dec. 1 and Dec. 24.
Additionally, a bonus “Treasure Card” will be in the store’s prize drawings, good for two reservations to the 2012 New Year’s Eve Gala at the Casino Ballroom. A toy drive will take place at the Wrigley Stage, as well, and participants are invited to bring an unwrapped toy to be donated to local children in need.
Pictures with Santa will be available at El Galleon Restaurant from 6 to 8:30 p.m. to those who bring in two canned goods items for the food drive.
