Take the Plunge on New Year’s Day!
AVALON— The City of Avalon and the Catalina Swim Club invite you for a New Year’s Day Polar Bear Plunge on Jan. 1. The day will feature two events, the first beginning with a one-mile swim at 7:30 a.m. with the Catalina Island Swim Club at Casino Dive Park. Intermediate to advanced swimmers are invited to swim the mile. The Polar Bear Plunge will take place at 11:30 a.m. at Middle Beach. It is family fun and participants are encouraged to dress up in their best polar bear costumes and take the plunge or swim the pier. KISL radio will be present to motivate participants with tunes, Catalina Cookie Co. will bring coffee and hot chocolate and Avalon Donut Shop will make polar bear cupcakes.
Participating in polar plunges on New Year’s Day has become a tradition in many places worldwide. Many people view the act of taking a cold dip on New Year’s Day as a symbolic way to start the year anew, facing challenges with resilience and embracing a fresh start. Other participants believe that the shock of cold water can have health benefits, such as boosting the immune system and increasing circulation.
