Letter to the Editor — Remembering SS United States
Byline: Jeff Olmstead
I was pleasantly surprised to read your Editorial section’s “Reader Rant” article (in the Nov. 8-21 issue of The Log) by Susan Gibbs, granddaughter of naval architect William Francis Gibbs.
I am currently reading “A Man and His Ship,” by Steven Ujifusa — the story of William Francis Gibbs’ lifelong quest to build his dream ocean liner, SS United States. I am a retired Merchant Marine officer, and I remember working with a few men who had sailed on the “Big U” during her days of transatlantic travel.
I would recommend the book to any of your readers whose interest in the ship might be piqued by this article.
