Port Hueneme channel deepening project delayed one year

What Happened: Port Hueneme City Council received and filed a report from staff regarding an update on the dredging and sand replenishment project at Hueneme Beach.

Two projects are currently underway at Channel Islands Harbor: a channel deepening project and an improvement project to berths and wharfs in the harbor.

Dredging of the Federal Channel is being led by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers through a cost-sharing grant. The $8 million project will deepen the channel from 35 to 40 feet.

The project is currently delayed due to restrictions on offloading sand on local beaches during the summer.

However, the $12.3 million project improvement project is on schedule. The project cost is covered by a federal Transportation Investment Generating Recovery grant.

What’s On Tap: The port’s deepening project will be delayed by a year. Beach nourishment will take place during an off year, according to staff.
