Three championships at stake during Long Beach Race Week

Ullman Sails racing event will feature Catalina 37 Nationals, Schock 35 Pacific Coast Championship and SoCal High Point Series.

LONG BEACH—Summer will be off to a hot start in Long Beach, as three championship regattas come to the Southern California coast, June 21-23.

The three championships up for grabs at the 2019 Ullman Sails Long Beach Race Week are Catalina 37 Nationals, Schock 35 Pacific Coast and Southern California High Point Series.

Five classes – J/70, J/80, J/105, J/109 and J/120 – will compete in the Southern California High Point Series.

The Catalina 37 and J/70 races are already brimming with registrants; seven skippers have signed up for Catalina 37, while six boats are entered into the J/70 race.

Catalina 37 registrants include Robert Gibbs of Arizona Yacht Club, Joan Byrne of South Beach Yacht Club and David Haas of Seal Beach Yacht Club.

San Diego Yacht Club’s Bruce Golison, King Harbor Yacht Club’s Tony Collins and San Francisco Yacht Club’s Brian Mullen are among those ready to go for the J/70 race.

Racing begins at 1 p.m. on June 21 – the first day of summer – followed by an evening party at Alamitos Bay Yacht Club (5-9 p.m.). Races start at noon on both June 22 and 23. Alamitos Bay YC will have a cash bar on June 22 (5-7 p.m.) and June 23 (3-5 p.m.). Long Beach Yacht Club, meanwhile, hosts the Mt. Gay Rum Party on June 22 (5-9 p.m.) and the trophy presentation on June 23 (5 p.m.).

Several prizes are up for grabs at the Ullman Sails Race Week, including Satariano Boat of the Week (one-design class winner), PHRF Boat of the Week, Catalina 27 National Championship title, Schock 35 Pacific Coast title, Kent Golison Family Trophy (highest placed boat with at least three members of an immediate family) and Travel Trophy (boat owner who traveled the farthest, based upon hometown).

Dates for Long Beach Race Week in 2020 and 2021 are already announced. The 2020 iteration of the Ullman Sails event will be held June 26-28. Long Beach Race Week will then be held, June 25-27. 2021.
